Looking to work on this project again

Hello everyone,

I know it's be quite a while and I apologize for any frustrations I may have caused but I'm thinking it's long past time I get to work fixing some of the issues with this extension so I'm willing to dedicate some more time to this and potentially bring others on to maintain it too.

So to that end I was wondering if I could get some feedback from the community around what needs fixing and what direction we'd like to take this in, I'll spend a little time today testing it out and seeing what state it's in myself and report back here with my findings.

Cheers!
Simon.

Hello, I'm not sure if you're aware but the currently most active fork of Privacy Redirect is LibRedirect, maybe that makes more sense to contribute directly with them? Benevolent resources are scarce and precious and I would hate to see two competiting projects who serve the same goal, it would be a waste of value.
(I am no dev so I hope I didn't make any misconception)

Well part of the idea behind creating this issue was to see if there was interest in continued development of this extension, if there is an alternative and it fills the requirements then we can retire this one.

I think a good move would be to upload LibRedirect to your project in the chrome/mozilla stores. Then the users using this unmaintained extention would just smoothly transition to the maintained one.
For this it maybe would be necesary to write migrations that migrate the old user configs to the new structure of libredirect. Assuming there were major changes there.

I generally agree with the sentiment @pH142857 suggestion put forward.

On a different note, I can help updating and maintaining a bit if you want to.

GOOD NEWS SIMON!

@pH142857 and @HeIIow2 I would suggest to keep both projects apart.

I would be glad to see mutual contributions to both projects from all of the maintainers involved.

One of the things I have taken from project LibRedirect was the structure of list of instances which is good and was implemented in two projects of mine: Proxy Redirect and Slixfeed (as TOML), and yet, Privacy redirect has made a good job at setting redirection rules within the list of instances, which makes it possible to add custom rules without intervening with the software code (i.e. rules are not "hard coded"), which is something that I want to add to my projects.

The reasons for the importance of having two projects of the same or similar type are:

  • Politics and decision making which might differ, and having a centralized project might prevent crutial ideas.
  • Mitigating or preventing conspiracies of bribing maintainers into making changes that are against the people who utilize it.
  • Conflict of interest which has let to outcasting of Mr. Esmail EL BoB @EsmailELBoBDev2 who has done absolutely no harm to anyone, which is the reason why I have decided to close a ticket similar to #436.
Myself and several other friends who maintain similar userscripts to Privacy Redirect are against the opinions that have led to the outcast and yet non of us deemed it appropriate to outcast instances of those who hold opinions that are against to ours and Mr. Esmail EL BoB.

In my news chat bot project I list five similar projects which I encourage peple to make use of, and these are, listed in the About dialog too.

Let's revive Proxy Redirect!

@SimonBrazell So, after 4 months with no updates from the maintainer, I have to assume this is abandoned. Not shaming anyone, I just want clarity for myself. Adding a notification on the README before people choose an abandoned solution would be a nice effort, though.
