web mercator columns for vector tiles broken?

There seems to be a projection issue with web mercator columns. We currently store all our geometries in both web mercator and census projections. When I make vector tiles from the census projection column, it doesn't seem to transform the geometry, at least in the queries I can see it running. When I try to make a vector tile layer from the web mercator column, nothing shows up in my preview. I don't get any errors. Zooming all the way out, I can't find the shapes somewhere else on the globe, so I'm not convinced it's just creating them in the wrong projection. Creating raster tiles from the web mercator column works just fine.
