Do you load any icons (font or otherwise) for dmenu? Just getting a box shape appear in dmenu.
Also in bspwmrc add
xsetroot -cursor_name left_ptr
yup i use font-Siji glyphs for some scripts (sorry i took this long to respond, and thanks for the tip!)
