What's in a name?

Book needs a name. Hardest part of anything really. Feel free to just drop ideas in here, whether they be good, bad, or other.

This will likely be open for a long, long time.

Well, I didn't choose "awesomeTome" and I think that it originally was just a goofy name for the database. The PDF itself currently gives a title of "The Tomes".

When we get a system-complete PDF, I could easily see trying to name it something with the classic D&D alliteration. Something along the lines of "Tomes & Texts: Inspired by the Works of Frank and K".

Putting Frank and K on the cover is fine, but I'd leave author names out of the title. We might be able to come up with a good "___ and ___" title if we think on it a bit. Though Tome starts with "T", "Tunnels and Trolls" is already taken. We should also avoid something that abbreviates to DnD, to avoid confusion. Other than that there's a lot of options.

Better than Mearls :p

We could just have a blank PDF and meet that standard...

Let's put one of those blank dpfs then, accomplish something early on ;-)

On names, I plan on just dropping things here as they strike me, because maybe something will be good or thought provoking or whatever.

  • "Infants and Immortals"
  • "Logistics and Legends"

There are actually two names we need here.

First, we need the name that goes on the cover. For that, I think that we want to stick with something like "The Tomes", maybe with a subheading like "Updated Rules for DnD 3.x". Every time I've met someone that knew about these rules, they were recognized under the name "tome rules".

Second, we need a name to disambiguate this effort from the awesomeTome and any past or future pdfs. For that, I'll actually suggest that we track down how many Tome PDFs there have been and then have version names drawn from classic DND monsters: first revision is "Aboleth", then "Balor", and so on. I figure that this pdf is somewhere around "Dragon" or "Efreeti".

The Tomes : Rules for your favorite Fantasy Kitchen Sink.

"Tome Heartbreaker Extraordinaire: Designed Extra New". See what I did there? :P

Heyoooooo!

Hi to you too SqueeG.

Haha, sorry it was an Ed Mcmahon reference.

Glad to see you on-board Sinister.

Hardly 'on-board'. I'll probably chime in occasionally - being a grad student is pretty hard work. I figured since I couldn't sleep anyway, I'd contribute something.

I'm planning on referring to this as the TRD (Tome Reference Document) until we have a more catchy name. But as it's a minor increment from SRD, I'm reasonably happy with it in the interim.

Yea I was using TSRD. I like TRD more, though.

Yeah, TRD is a solid name, even to keep long term if we want.
