Server tests

We should have solid test coverage of the server codebase so that we can integrate complex changes more quickly and confidently.

Tests should also be hooked into a CI process eventually, so that we can push changes to a staging environment, where the code is automatically tested before being merged, and failed tests are reported via Slack.
