Heatmap/Value-map framework

In order to support various blue-sky ideas (especially wrt a "Land Value" map), I need to be able to map out various map-style data, such as elevation, mineral density, etc. A generic class that handles this sort of information, with options for data granularity, map functions (smoothing, etc), and more would come in handy.
