It's stated in the limitations, "Cannot have fields with the same ending key name (ie cannot have [fields]{#ID} and [fields]{#ID}[subfields]{#ID} currently"
Any update on this?
Been a huge fan of the plug-in (using for 3 months or so) and has made the collaboration effort between myself and development much quicker and with much less errors.

Glad to hear you are enjoying ESD, and thanks for using it! Admittedly, I've been holding off on Nested Element fixes until I can add XML support... which I've been avoiding because it's a pretty big refactor. Currently, my plans are to get automation working then switch to updating Nested Elements, so this is on the list of things to do soon™.
