I'm running TeXlive up to date, Linux Mint 20.2, Cinamon 5.05, openjdk version "1.8.0_292".

$ sudo tlcockpit
[sudo] password for dom:

Solved the problem. I had java version 8 but javac 11. Following the remarks by The Professor at stackoverflow, I set my java version to 11

$ sudo update-alternatives --config java
[sudo] password for xxx:
There are 2 choices for the alternative java (providing /usr/bin/java).

  Selection    Path                                            Priority   Status
------------------------------------------------------------
  0            /usr/lib/jvm/java-11-openjdk-amd64/bin/java      1111      auto mode
  1            /usr/lib/jvm/java-11-openjdk-amd64/bin/java      1111      manual mode
* 2            /usr/lib/jvm/java-8-openjdk-amd64/jre/bin/java   1081      manual mode

And now tlcockpit runs fine.

Now, what's else is going to break because my system is now defaulting to java 11 :-)

Good that you found the problem!

Thanks. Nice to hear from you, Norbert.
