OWID migration from JHU to WHO data issues

Closed this issue · 3 comments

For our users:

  • Because JHU have stopped tracking covid cases and deaths, OWID, which we source the data from, have now moved to using WHO data.
  • Because the WHO treats Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan as part of China, and this algorithm expects data from these locations, our pages have stopped updating.
  • We hope to solve the issues brought about by this change in the week of March 13th.

This has now been fixed. Note: we will continue to provide estimates of excess deaths from HK, Macau and Taiwan. However, we will not be able to provide official covid-19 data unless this is fixed by OWID or made (easily) available elsewhere.

I am currently sorting an issue with the most recent observations due to the above shift. While this does not affect our total estimates measurably, it does affect a) the display of total official covid-19 deaths, and b) our most recent daily estimate of excess deaths.

Fixed by ensuring all iso3c present in data frame for all recent days (even when NA)
