Strava Heat Map - useful for showing recreational routes?

Opened this issue · 4 comments

Cyclists log their GPS routes on this sports tracking and social media website; Strava

Could it improve the quality of desire lines?
Could the data be used for a hack? Can it be extracted from Strava?
I do not know!

It is indeed a good indicator, even if it is mostly used for recreational trips.
But i think that they do not release it as open data...

Interesting topic! I looked into this recently since I was thinking of using their data on mountain hiking trails.

@temospena you are right! They sell the data, and more to it a visualizer with some interaction for it, and the price really depends on the city size and the purpose, you really need to have a talk with them to work with the data.

It is true that mainly it is used for recreational purposes, but they do want to follow on commutes, when you log a trip you can tag it as a commute (I myself do this often). They use this tag to add to their visualizer. I find it interesting data but have not worked with it myself, but here is the link to more info: https://metro.strava.com/ and a demo of their viewer: https://metroview.strava.com/demo

Good news, just yesterday Strava Metro announced it will be free: https://blog.strava.com/the-new-human-powered-era-20951/?$web_only=true
