As much as this is a nice idea, there's not really much of a reason (in my eyes) to change it.
I don't think moving to Linux is going to be a thing with this codebase (CLR, windows forms, DirectS how Audio...) and this part seems far more reliable than the saving/restoring functionality of the serverstate XML.
