Project start - action items

Closed this issue · 1 comments

The final project will be starting next week! Here are some action items to do (ideally before Thursday):

  • make action items into issue on r course repo (Maddy)
  • update Ahmed and Lindsay on action items (Maddy)
  • choose group sizes
    - 5 groups of 4, 2 groups of 3
  • decide how groups will be chosen
    - class will choose
  • decide what the last assignment will be
  • set up meeting for Monday
    - 6 pm hangout
  • get group decision on dataset uniqueness (Maddy)
    - We won't enforce uniqueness; by providing lots of datasets it should be okay.
  • update lecture notes for Tuesday:
    • add assessment changes and specifics (Maddy)
      • update dataset list (James)
    • choose some NEON datasets to highlight (James)
  • create document for Quercus that outlines project and deliverables
  • add project submission info to Quercus doc
  • look over updates to lecture notes (Ahmed and Lindsay)
  • update syllabus with presentation date (James)
  • fix assignment titles in syllabus (Maddy)

For assessment, here's some specifics that I'm thinking about

  • Weekly project updates:
    • On Tuesdays at the beginning of class
    • Two people present from the group, rotate each class
    • 2 minutes each
  • Project deliverables:
    • Report styled as a journal article: Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion (can make more / different sections if they want)
    • All the code: project results must be reproducible by someone else
    • 10 minute presentation with 2 minutes for questions, styled as a conference presentation (assume not too much familiarity with the topic in the audience)
    • Self-assessed contributions: max 1 page outlining individual contributions (code, writing, presenting, etc)
