After spending hours trying to get this to work I used this forked version and it worked instantly: https://github.com/jeduan/cordova-plugin-facebook4

Also unlike this version, the facebook4 plugin has been updated in the last few weeks.

Perhaps others will benefit from this. I am using the latest phonegap build.
