Would if be possible to report the fact that an IoT device is down via MQTT? I use HomeAssistant (seen you in the forums there), and would like to be able to trigger things when a sensor stops sending, and this would be an easy way to inform HA.

Yes, I can add this, any ideas for how it should work exactly? Is it sufficient to be able to configure one MQTT topic where all alerts will be posted?

Probably, that and a json payload should allow one to configure appropriate template switches in HA.
