either from lenovo or perhaps a custom developed firmware?
Lenovo has not yet indicated that a fix is in sight, or that they are aware of the issue. They have fixed a similar issue on the A-series twice, so they are aware of that other one.
Some more searching led me to this:

But in the readme he notes that lenovo is now checking the digital signatures, which seems like it means if you do end up somehow patching your firmware, you won't be able to get further bios updates
I think you said it best in one of the reddit posts, what's the point of praising Thinkpad keyboards, because even if the physical keyboard is great, the software controlling them sucks
Yet another persistent, major and un- or under-acknowledge ThinkPad problem. Well, great Lenovo.
