This might also be a good opportunity to solve #254.

@fabriziofortino @nfsantos I think it probably makes most sense to prioritize this issue over #391 and #360. We should clean up #347 , merge it, and then proceed to go through the typical PRs for each 8.x version until we're on the latest. Then come back to #391 if it's still necessary.
