Is South really needed?

In steps 7 and 8 of the readme, it seems like we need to use South.

Can you comment on this. If it's really needed, it might be useful to put a sentence or two about why it's necessary.

you generally don't need south, but if you add a content type after you used syncdb you need to change the database, so we use it only with south but it's not necessary. i'll change the docs when i have time to
