Pasting text with <>, [], ~ isn't escaped

Expected behavior
Text with any Bookdown special characters should be escaped.
Actual behavior
When pasting code snippets that contain < > characters into the body text editor (using either CMD-V or the ribbon), the text isn't parsed properly, seemingly adding reference errors and phantom tokens/objects.
Related: Sometimes (not all the time? Unsure of the trigger) pasting text with < > will cause phantom references to appear at the end of the chapter.
