Thumbnails now being over written

we used a version of this script for ages and the thumbnails stayed but now they are being set to blank. This is so frustrating as it worked so well before. I would love an update that also updates the thumbnail with an image from disk or a web location.

I have found that the error stems from the original mxd, you must have created a thumbnail, even though you will not use it for the picture thumbnail on AGOL for them to stick after updating the service
