<ehsavoie> aslak: hi, what do you think a french translation of your continuous dev book ?
<aslak> ehsavoie heya, that sounds very interesting :)
<ehsavoie> aslak: is the co-author and the editor ok with that ?
<aslak> ehsavoie you volunteering ?
<ehsavoie> aslak: yep, but you'll have to tell me which chapters are 'stable'
<ehsavoie> ;)
<ehsavoie> because it's quite hard to keep in sync translations
<aslak> ehsavoie well, the book it self is cc-share-alike.. so you / we are allowed to do what ever we want with it
<aslak> ehsavoie yea, I wouldn't start right now.. final draft will be done in a few weeks
<ehsavoie> aslak: ok
<aslak> ehsavoie if you want to do a 'official' translation via oreilly I can get you in touch with our editor
<ehsavoie> aslak: let's get started, I'll keep that in mind just in case during the journey
<aslak> ehsavoie sorry, keep what in mind?
<ehsavoie> the official o'reilly book
<aslak> aa
<ehsavoie> translation
<aslak> sure..
<aslak> Le développement continu de l'entreprise en Java
<aslak> hehe
<ehsavoie> ;)
<aslak> ehsavoie I believe Chapter 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 are 99% stable at this point
<ehsavoie> ok i'll start with them
<aslak> ehsavoie let me send a email with you, andrew and me..
<aslak> just to inject him into the conversation..
<aslak> no, better yet.. let's make a issue for it :)
<ehsavoie> ;o)

ping: @ALRubinger @ehsavoie

Let's ask Meghan (our editor) too...O'Reilly does translations worldwide
and I'd hate to see you put in all this awesome effort which would be
redundant. :)

I don't see a message and so am not quite sure of the question :-) From the subject line, someone wants to do a French translation?
NOTE: It was Meghan who sent this and got parsed by the system here to come from me, ALR. :)

Yep, I do

The above comment that APPEARS to have come from me "I don't see the message" actually was sent by Meghan via email, and got somehow incorrectly parsed here.

Meghan's going to be looking into this for us, her reply:

"I've emailed our Rights team, and will let you know what I hear. I do think the CC license the book is under affects translations in some (possibly negative) way, but I am not 100% clear on the specifics. The Rights people should know."

Meghan/O'Reilly reports that it's unlikely we'll do translations via official publishing channels for this one, so @ehsavoie - you're a GO if you'd like to do this! (Personal opinion, that'd be amazing - thank you!)

@ALRubinger Does that mean that they won't make a French paper v? or just that they won't translate it via their channels?

It means that it's likely they won't be translating it via their
channels. So you are likely free to translate it without competition.

Note: This only applied to book text and images (ie. screenshots) we've
provided. Any O'Reilly materials including the cover or images they create
(the figures and charts) can't be re-purposed by us. If any of this is
confusing, just ask! :)

S,
ALR

Any O'Reilly materials including the cover or images they create (the figures and charts) can't be re-purposed by us

A translation is considered re-purposed?

I have to ask, because when I spoke to Meghan about this earlier, DevoxxUK or OSCon who keeps track, I got the 'impression' O'Reilly didn't keep cover and book graphs etc as a trade secret, and we were free to use them as we wanted, at least in connection with the book.

In my eyes, a French translation is still 'The Book', but maybe they see it differently.

I will forward Meghan's reply to @aslakknutsen, must keep it off the public
list here though. Sorry. :)

Ok,
I'll try to get an head start before announce it more loudly ;o) using some french floss channels ;-)
As to the cover, it seemed to me that this was 'unusable' when i translated the maven book(s) (before sonatype retook them).
