Github Desktop deleted all files in folder (pls help i spent so much time on these projects)

I decided to try out github desktop on my mac and I wanted to upload my files to github. Without understanding the whole process, I tried to publish the files and now all the files are deleted from the folder. I also looked on my repository online and the files weren't there either.
