Activity logs/server startup issues

Saw some strange activity log issues, such as:
(i) Starting timestamp greater than ending timestamp (where starting is
either an overflow or bogus value b/c so large)
(ii) Any other issues (such as NPE, etc)
The correctness of the servers' data depends on this working correctly, so
should verify server startup thread as well.
