Hinting causes i/j-dots to disappear at smaller font sizes

Opened this issue · 0 comments

At smaller font sizes (e.g. 13 px), it seems like the hinting shifts the mean line upwards a little too much, which

  • might generally distort the font proportions a little bit too much?
  • more annoyingly and less debatably e.g. causes the dots on the j and i to get almost swallowed by the main body of the letter below. This effect gets worse with higher font weights, though it's noticeable with the regular/book weight, too.

Example of semi-bold text at 13px with full hinting as per current .otf files – note the rendering of the j and i:
FiraGO 13px Semi-bold with hinting
…and without (or at least reduced? – see #39) hinting as per the current .woff/woff2 files:
FiraGO 13px Semi-bold without hinting
