How trustworthy can this client be?

My issue is that a VPN client is a great place to put a Trojan.

I am not casting any doubt on the authors or the project, but what assurance 
can be given that the code downloaded here is safe for use, and won't (for 
instance) report my VPN passwords to someone else.

This is an important question, at least while Google/Android still declines to 
include VPN functionality in the OS releases.
