Connect method from console or patch does not make gui connection

Calling the "connect" method from the Python console, or via an @connect MethodCall, doesn't cause a graphical connection to be made even though the actual connection is OK.

The commit above is a bit tangled with the other issue, but does fix this bug. Closing the ticket.
