This might or might not have happened at the time I had a lot of trouble on my system due to the Synaptics --> libinput migration in Debian.

Got the tipoff from this mailing list message. The ScrollDirection object used to be either UP or DOWN.... now, it's almost always SMOOTH and you have to look at the scroll delta to figure out which way it's going. The above commits will get merged to master with feature/cascade-of-style
