Running commands on visual selection

There is a usecase when you want to run commands on the visual selection.

I couldn't find an easy way to do that, because (a) there is no way to reliably run commands on a selection if the selection is a substring of the line and (b) it would require hacks to echo the string before applying the command, which would break the current command interface.

Any suggestions in this topic are welcome.
