No choice of separator for character vectors

Currently the separator for symbols in a character vector is the empty string (or, strictly, there is no separator).

Retaining the default of the empty string, it would help to have a control parameter that allowed the user to choose other separators, allowing e.g. comma- or tab-separated strings.
