Allowing read access to sensor data via the JSON API in a standardized way has a lot of real world applications
specially for automation & central control among others .
It is listed as draft here https://kno.wled.ge/interfaces/json-api/#sensors hence i think it is the plan .
This would even make wled a good platform to test/use different sensors and HW beyond the use of leds .
