Programmatically remove atom / card

How do you obtain current editor cursor position to remove an atom / card that has an "onclick" handler?
A running version is here where I'd like to remove the atom when X icon is clicked.
Reading docs, I'm unable to figure out the API removal steps. Appreciate advice on how that can be achieved.
