.join Method and Strings Issue

Ruby 1.9.2, getting a NoMethodError for .join on "":String. when using nanoc compile. The backtrace is puking into layout/default but I can't see where .join is being used in that file except at the on the very first few lines, and it is being used on Arrays which should be fine. Any help? Thank you
