The FreeMarker docs state the square bracket syntax is an alternative.
It should be mentioned in the README that this syntax file only works for the square bracket syntax and will not work with the default.
It took me a while to realise what my issue was, and I wouldn't be surprised if people just think this is broken, when it still works.
