Unfortunately it is not possible to use it without a new, working upstream_roundrobin or upstream_hash patch.

Sorry to say so , but I have to agree.I don't get why this issue is so lacking
Why Don't we make an effort and try to somehow make into mainstream ? Maybe Contact Sysov and query about these issues , as they tend to be nginx's soft spot
