Fields with empty values in metadata records increases block length

Fields such as

example:\r\n

get serialized to

example: \r\n

which may be undesirable.

In section 1 of http://tools.ietf.org/search/draft-kunze-anvl-02 , the example shows a space is not added for an empty value.
