- Why aren't these changes pushed into the upstream rather than in a fork?

Just to clarify for accidentally stumbled visitors - the upstream is not maintained as its readme states.

Correct. The original wasn't maintained anymore and this fork was created to help integrate with our own projects. Somewhere along the way, I think the community stumbled upon this and hoped we were picking up the torch and maintaining dagre further but I don't think we have the capacity to do that. This is a fork like any other.
