We will need one to initiate the p2p communication between chains.

pretty cool project. what do you need exactly? an always-on ethereum node? or some special bootstrap node.

Yeah, an always-on ethereum node that mines periodically using a systemd timer.
And a bootnode as well, because private nets need their own.
