Overview

We need to create a checklist of easy tasks for new potential contributors to complete so that they can get acclimated to TrashAI without using up too much bandwidth of other team members. This will allow new team members to feel integrated to the project more quickly than before, and will hopefully improve volunteer retention.

Action Items

  • Determine what new contributors need to know before they can work on TrashAI.
  • Format this information into a checklist, probably in an issue template or copy-able issue that new contributors can make whenever they join the project.
  • Write up instructions for new users on how to do this onboarding tasklist.
  • Write up instructions for C4S leadership on how to carryout this onboarding in the long run, assuming that it works.
  • Launch onboarding system.

Anything else?

Here's an example of a self-onboarding issue we used last summer with HfLA to bring on 12 summer interns to the website team.

Here's another example of an issue we used to onboard and off-board team members - this is an issue that was used repeatedly and never actually "closed"

#158 here is the issue

Here is where we can write instructions for using this issue - but is this necessary? Or is the onboarding process clear enough as it is?

This is my last day with Code for Sac, and I will be handing this issue over to the ice box for now until someone else is ready to pick it up. Currently we have a template for an onboarding issue but may need to think about other ways to use this since it can be quite a lot for one PM to have to go through this with multiple people every week, if new people are constantly joining. This is something that should be discussed at greater depth by more of the TrashAI/C4S leaders.

Thanks for everything you've done Elizabeth. Appreciate all your hard work.
