Image scaling is not very smooth in IE & Edge

The scale transition that happens when you hover over an image looks smooth in every browser except IE and Edge... This seems to also be the case in other examples across the internet.
I found several possible solutions for related issues, but none of them actually solved this problem. Any ideas are welcome.
