For example, GitHub's Welcome Bot which can be configured to respond to first time PRs & Issues with guidelines, a nice message and links to resources: https://github.com/apps/welcome
PR-Triage can help automatically add labels to new PRs or issues: https://github.com/apps/pr-triage
Also the All-Contributors bot which can help manage capturing the different contributions: https://github.com/apps/allcontributors
These don't replace human interactions but can help a small team keep on top of acknowledging new contributors

Based on the discussion we could also expand this to include GitHub actions to automate the collation of first time PRs
