What happened?

I can't install a new node version. When I try nvm install 20.12.1 I get the following error.

Could not retrieve https://nodejs.org/dist/latest/SHASUMS256.txt.

Get "https://nodejs.org/dist/latest/SHASUMS256.txt": read tcp 192.168.0.156:50907->104.20.23.46:443: wsarecv: An existing connection was forcibly closed by the remote host.

nvm debug says it can't connect to nodejs.org.

Since you posted this right around the time 20.12.1 was released, I think you ran into the eager beaver problem.

20.12.1 installed fine for me, approximately 12 hours after the release.
