Adding custom fields / variables in Item descriptions

Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
When dealing with recursive invoices it could be nice to have a moving part in the item description such as invoicing period

Perhaps something like:

Describe alternatives you've considered
Able to set the email subject & body per recursive invoice
as well as able to add Custom Fields on those two.

Custom fields are currently broken per this issue. You can create the custom field and enter the values once, but you cannot edit them unless you paste the custom value in over and over.

This option would be super nice — without this feature Recurring Invoices makes no sense.
