Remove just file extensions?

I like the ability to not display the file extension, but it seems in its current implementation it just looks for a . and truncates the rest.

I'm using it to display artwork and names like "M.C. Escher" or dates with "c." for circa get mangled.

Would it be possible to have it start looking from the other end of the file name? That would catch it every time.
