Currently gds_py is built in parallel to gds because sf cannot coexist with a previously installed gdal. It might be possible to "turn off" access to existingly installed gdal (from conda) while installing the R stack and turning back on.

this is currently implemented in the test_one_stack branch. Closing as it seems to work.
