Steps to reproduce bug

Attempt to open Barrier
"Barrier quit unexpectedly" error appears, and the program is closed immediately

Other info

When did the problem start to occur? I upgraded to OSX 10.9 specifically so I could use Barrier, and the issue happened straight away.
Is there a way to work around it? Not that I have discovered so far.
Does this bug prevent you from using Barrier entirely? Yes

Perhaps a documentation update is required.

Additional background:

If run manually from the terminal, the message

"LSOpenURsLsWithRole() failed with error -10810 for the file /Applications/Barrier.app."

is given.

If the actual "barrier" executable inside of that .app bundle is run via the command line, the message

"Sorry, "Barrier" can not be run on this version of macOS. Qt requires macOS 10.12.0 or later, you have macOS 10.9.5."

is given.

It appears that the version of the Qt framework (5.12.0?) upon which the current release of Barrier is built does not support Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks. (For reference, Synergy 1.8.8 used Qt framework 5.2.0, which was compatible with Mac OS X 10.9, and Synergy 1.7.7 used a version of Qt framework v4)

Confirming this, the notes on the github "releases" page dated 28-Jun-2019 state:

"v2.3.0 requires macOS 10.12"

If this is still true (and thus this isn't actually a bug), please consider changing the "MacOS/OS X" portion of the FAQ section of the README.md file

from:

Additionally, the "info.plist" file in the current and future applications should have the following change made

from:

to:

This change will cause the GUI to give a better error message to the user when launching Barrier is attempted on an unsupported macOS X operating system.

Whenever the underlying Qt framework is updated in the future, that minimum version may have to be incremented again.

Note: For users running on older versions of macOS, try

Barrier v2.1.0 (for macOS 10.10 Yosemite and later)
Barrier v2.3.2, run from the command line (barriers and barrierc binaries) (for MacOS X 10.9 Mavericks and later; may work on earlier versions as well)
It does not appear that the GUI of any pre-compiled MacOS X releases of Barrier will fully function on Mac OS X 10.9 Mavericks, at least not without modification.

Note: this issue only affects the GUI under older MacOS X versions. Manual configuration and operation of the "barrierc" and "barriers" binaries contained within the .app package of even the most recent release (2.3.2) may work on those systems (they launch under 10.9.5 and run as long as crypto is turned off* on the client and server). The instructions for non-graphical setup under Linux should be mostly applicable here.

This certificate can probably be created manually, but for testing I just copied an existing one from a computer running macOS 10.12 that was created automatically by Barrier v.2.3.2.
(Tl;dr: the current version, 2.3.2, works to connect a computer running 10.9 with one running 10.12, but only when setting up manually on the 10.9 computer.)

More boring testing information: I was able to get a GUI version of Barrier v.2.3.2 functioning by replacing the "synergyc" and "synergys" files in a copy of the Synergy 1.8.8 application bundle with the current "barrierc" and "barriers" files. SSL connections are not possible unless the GUI version of Synergy used supports turning that on.

FWIW, I was able to make a fully-functioning version by taking an application package of Synergy 1.7.5 that I built from source five years ago, and replacing its icon file, replacing the "synergyc" client binary with the Barrier 2.3.2 "barrierc" client binary, replacing the "synergys" server binary with the Barrier 2.3.2 "barriers" server binary, and making a few modifications to the "info.plist" file. All the new files I copied over were re-named to match the original Synergy names. It works and communicates with the stock Barrier 2.3.2 client on macOS 10.12 and the stock Barrier 2.3.2 client running on a Raspberry Pi. Working with SSL on and off. So... if someone wants to modify or fork Barrier to provide a working package for Mac OS X 10.10/10.9, it shouldn't be that much work as long as they use the GUI code from several years ago.

@kxkxkxnz: This may be worth a try for you:

Thank you so much @jgrisham for your very thorough and detailed response - this is extremely helpful! You are right that the 'minimum system version' string should be changed, as that was what set me toward fruitlessly upgrading to 10.9 (and subsequently downgrading back to 10.8.5 after finding that necessary peripherals I have aren't compatible with 10.9).

I am happy to use Barrier from the command line and now with your help I have got it working that way in 10.8.5.

Going forward from the next release, this should hopefully now result in users receiving an error message instead of a crash (see changes to 'Info.plist' in #1260).

I could not get the version you built and kindly offered for download to work but can confirm that the command line version of Barrier works absolutely fine on Mavericks 10.9. That is great news because I still have a "legacy" music workstation for which I no longer need to keep a keyboard and mouse on my desk!

@jgrisham Do you know which version actually worked on PowerPC? (Not just built.)
This is likely to differ for GUI and non-GUI, since for the former we need Qt4, as of now, while for the latter the only constraint is Apple favorite ObjC madness :)
