auditioning a midi note on phrase screen resets the midi instrument number on next button press

If you set a midi instrument, eg. I13 and then press A to audition its sound, pressing A immediately after that (eg to re-audition it or to switch to another instrument number) immediately resets the instrument number back to 01.
