Planning Meeting for Strategic Reproducible Analytical Pipelines: Dreams and Hopes for the Future 🌳

What is the challenge?

The Spatial Reproducible Reporting has been identified as a core activity in our branch. Consequently, we want to develop a plan to support this work, using our current available resources.

Evaluation of Priorities, Goals and Roles

  • Step back to set this up as a core activity and discuss what is the goal: data discovery tool/inventory to facilitate conversations... "first stop to respond to requests".
  • What's next? Business as usual, or...
  • This will also dictate who will be our audience e.g. do we want more people to use it? more users can increase the value of this tool.
  • Priorities and roles may evolve/change. For example, we have a new SARA project with different objectives as well as the Whale Sightings DM apps tool TBD.

Current staff available

  • Technical Lead: Quentin Stoyel
  • New PC-02: SARA project (different but linked!)
  • Engagement coordination, minor coding: Catalina Gomez
  • Advisor: Remi Daigle
  • Champion: Tana Worcester

Current resources/infrastructure available

  • Spatial Reproducible Report
  • Shiny App
  • Reproducible Analytical Pipeline for data wrangling

Team Meetings

Our biggest asset!

  • Quentin's time! Although now is great because he is working on this project for a big chunk of time :)

What can we do really well with current funding? (in order of priority)

  1. Respond to requests from PIER, aquaculture siting, CSAS et al. [Quentin, Catalina or Remi]
  2. Technical report published!!!!! (July 2022) [Catalina] 🤸 🦋
  3. Supporting new SARA proposal for a new pilot for automatic data mining [Quentin, Catalina and Remi]
  4. Maintenance of the RR tool in its current form [Quentin]
  5. Inclusion/updates data records [Quentin]
  6. Engagement sessions to continue to advance the scope of this work this project [Quentin, Catalina and Remi]

How can we prioritize - where should the RR go long-term? Many options!

  1. Full back burner: Only run reports as requested, minimal data updating / adding (2-3 hours/month?)
  2. Life support: Run reports and update data on as needed basis (2-3 hours/week?)
  3. Still kicking: Run reports and data updates, but also make obvious additions to the reports (Current status)
  4. All go: Create new features/workflows/reports, keep adding to reports and run engagement to identify new additions/reports (including future reproducible report needs e.g. offshore wind energy via MSP).

Current Work Plans

Directly related to RR project:

  • Exploring how to keep the tool updated with as little effort as possible by coordinating with Brian Bower, science folks, and other sectors (MPC and IP)
  • Quentin updating RR tool with new datasets
  • Quentin testing new workflow using internal GIS set up
  • Remi supporting staffing of new PC-02 to support this work and SARA project
  • Quentin and Catalina supporting inter-sectorial engagement workshop on July 8th
  • Catalina coordinating few (1!) tactical meetings to advance priority topics e.g. updating ISDB/MARFIS using new eGIS workflow
  • Collaboration with Sean Butler to finish the workflow/publication of data Charlotte mined
  • Quentin supporting Donald P. in Gulf Region to include the SARA app in RR (collaboration initiated by Tana a few years ago)
  • CSRF final report submitted (June 17) Quentin got award and congrats from Francine because he is awesome.

Indirectly related to RR:

  • Catalina working with CSAP in developing example for LaTeX team in Germany to solve issues of accessibility
  • Team to host conversations with other programs and activities to continue to join efforts under the same umbrella of reproducibility
