Possible NFS mount .vscode-server issues when opening vscode in container

I had some strange errors trying to launch vscode and it turned out that it was failing to mkdir in my .vscode-server, which is mapped to /dls/science/.... I had to delete the contents and then it launched OK.

I believe we had issues with scratch too. But scratch would be preferable if I can get it working. WIl look into this.
