Error when opening several files from different directories

Apparently giv only saves the directory of the last opened file as the current directory.
Thus if two files in two different dirs are opened, their vector data is retained, but since the images are only loaded when opening the files, the background images of all files but the last can't be opened unless the full path is specified in the giv data
