Why do I constantly getting slower results with FrankenPHP vs php:8.3-fpm

What happened?

I've cloned one of my projects and made a small modification to the Dockerfile, switching the base image from php:8.3-fpm to dunglas/frankenphp. While testing, I successfully implemented 103 Early Hints, which worked as expected.

However, I’ve noticed a significant difference in performance when testing the application on Safari (with and without caching disabled). With php:8.3-fpm, the average loading time is around 170ms, while frankenphp often takes approximately 300ms. Although there are occasional instances where frankenphp performs better and just as well, but these results are inconsistent. The performance disparity persists even when 103 Early Hints are not in use.

I had hoped FrankenPHP would be somewhat faster. Is there any optimizations to be done here?

Oh, and both was with localhost:80, as I saw that https was slightly slower.

Here are two images showing how the page loads. I consistently observe that FrankenPHP provides a better document load time compared to the php:8.3-fpm server. However, there’s a significant delay between the page load and asset load with FrankenPHP. For reference, the php:8.3-fpm setup uses Caddy, with essentially the same Caddyfile configuration.

In both waterfalls, I see assets start loading around the same time (~70ms) leading me to believe it is cpu-bound. If I run it through webpagetest, I can confirm it to some extent. A cpu-bound page load with better network performance will paradoxically result in longer page loads due to triggering repainting/layouts more often while the cpu-bottleneck is in play.

Note: I also see some evidence of less bandwidth due to (what I assume is) longer download times. So, you may be serving on different hardware/networks that result in poorer performance overall.

Thanks! I agree with your point about the CPU-bound issue since both assets start loading around the same time. However, both tests were conducted on the same Mac, so there shouldn’t be a significant difference in hardware or network conditions. Could it be that there's a difference in the gzip or file_server in Caddy? Assets are handled like this:

I believe frankenphp uses a different encoding by default: brotli (br).

I think the green lines in the network panel signify waiting for the server response and the blue lines signify downloading content. Since the blue lines are larger in the frankenphp case it does indeed look like the request is not being encoded and therefore is larger (and takes longer to download).
Can you verify in the network panel if they are encoded differently or try encode zstd br gzip in your Caddyfile?

On the other hand, your images are probably already pre-compressed, so it seems more like the upper profile with frankenphp is stretched out compared to the fpm profile.
Instead of looking at absolute ms numbers in these profiles it's often better to compare the duration of certain operations.

I’ve reintroduced encode zstd br gzip, as it was before, but noticed no significant difference.

In terms of indicators: green signifies “Waiting” and blue indicates “Downloading.”

It’s clear that FrankenPHP is indeed faster when loading PHP scripts and documents. However, there’s an issue with the waiting time for assets. The strange part is that the browser doesn’t wait for server, it just takes a noticeable amount of time before even attempting to process the assets.

Occasionally, the FrankenPHP project starts quickly, reducing load times to as low as 80ms with caching disabled. But with each subsequent request, the browser seems to slow down, despite the total download size remaining constant. Here’s an example from the FrankenPHP project showing how far of the assets are from the document in time.

Why don’t I get the same type of browser response from the PHP8-FPM project? I essentially just copied the project and replaced Docker and Caddy.

Honestly not sure what else the browser might be trying to process if the html is the same.

Look at the size differences. There is def an encoding difference or possibly something else different in the headers.

They are entirely kbs apart, so most likely encoding.

I had same problem with Google Chrome. But now I'm no longer (yet) able to recreate the problem. Not sure what's the difference, but I tried some JS optimization. I don't see how this would improve the issue when both system had the same JS. I would expect browsers to behave similar. I'll keep you posted if issue arise again.
