thinkbayes DocBook: <bar> tag has no effect

The <bar> tag seems to have no effect. Here's the DocBook:
<mathit id="a0000007188">
<bar id="a0000001871">
<plastex:arg name="self">H</plastex:arg>
</bar></mathit>
The result is just an H with no bar.
Should I be generating different DocBook, or does this have to be mathML?
